MUNICH Beyond ist die gemeinsame XR- und Immersive-Storytelling-Initiative des Festival der Zukunft und des FILMFEST MÜNCHEN, entwickelt und durchgeführt in Zusammenarbeit mit uns vom XR HUB Bavaria, dem Residenztheater München und dem Deutschen Theatermuseum München, gefördert durch den FilmFernsehFonds Bayern (FFF).

Wir freuen uns auf das spannende Programm von MUNICH Beyond – die große XR-Ausstellung findet vom 2.-4. Juli 2026 statt, aber auch davor und danach gibt es XR Events. Das Programm verbindet eine große XR Ausstellung, Talks, Workshops, den New Realities Wettbewerb, Screenings und Netzwerkformate an immer mehr Orten in München.

„From Dust“ im Deutschen Theatermuseum kann zwei Wochen lang erlebt werden, vom 26. Juni bis 11. Juli! Tickets bekommt Ihr hier.

Beim Festival der Zukunft ist der Samstag der Familientag bei freiem Eintritt. Für die anderen Tage braucht Ihr ein Ticket für das Festival der Zukunft oder eine Filmfest-Akkreditierung.

Die internationalen Beiträge aus den Niederlanden werden durch die freundliche Unterstützung des Königreichs der Niederlande ermöglicht.

Trefft dort auch die Delegation des Projektes Unternehmen START, eine Kooperation zwischen dem Goethe Institut und dem Institut Francais.

Welcome to MUNICH Beyond: Bavaria Meets the International XR Ecosystem
16:00–16:30 Future Box / Experience Area

This session offers an introduction to Bavaria’s rapidly growing XR ecosystem and to the second edition of MUNICH Beyond, launched in 2025 as a joint initiative by Festival der Zukunft, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN and XR HUB Bavaria. In collaboration with Residenztheater München and Deutsches Theatermuseum München, and supported by FilmFernsehFonds Bayern, MUNICH Beyond brings together groundbreaking XR works from around the world and strengthens Munich and Bavaria as an emerging hub for immersive storytelling.

In this networking session, key players from the regional ecosystem will share insights into the collaborations, structures and support systems shaping XR in Bavaria today. Together with international artists and guests — including contributors from the Netherlands, whose participation is made possible with the kind support of the Kingdom of the Netherlands — the session opens a space for exchange on new creative alliances, future audiences and the next steps for immersive media in Europe.

Enge Förderlogiken, unsichere Erlöse, wenig Spielraum – viele Filmschaffende kennen das. Aber was, wenn genau diese Enge der Ausgangspunkt für etwas Neues ist? Produzentin Katharina Weser zeigt, wie sie neue Räume erschlossen hat: XR, immersive Installationen, neue Erlösmodelle – als Erweiterung dessen, was Film sein kann. Danach wird die Bühne geöffnet: Wer eigene Erfahrungen oder Fragen mitbringt, ist eingeladen mitzudenken.

New Realities Competition Finale: XR for a Better Future

Under the patronage of Bavaria’s Minister for Digital Affairs, Dr. Fabian Mehring, the New Realities Competition 2026 – hosted by XR HUB Bavaria and 1E9 – celebrates innovative ideas that harness XR technologies to improve our world and create new experiences. This year’s focus is on the fusion of Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

From a pool of submissions, the most promising projects have been selected to present their concepts at this grand finale. Finalists will showcase their ideas to a distinguished jury – and the winning project will receive a €1,000 prize, recognizing excellence in leveraging XR and AI for societal benefit.

XR in the Wild – Where immersive storytelling meets the real world

Over the past decade, XR has produced extraordinary projects  — from narrative VR experiences to dance projects, art installations, operas and (silent) discos in VR. Festivals have played a crucial role and starting point for their distribution.

We will get to know and talk to a number of excellent artists and creators about their works, inspiration and what drives them to use XR technologies for their work. We will also hear about the a fantastic programme run by CIIIC in the Netherlands.

In the final round, we will address how the XR Community is developing at the moment. How does the distribution evolve? Does immersive storytelling and related art forms increasingly enter theatres, museums, exhibitions, and public spaces? What is needed for this? How much entrepreneurial spirit is necessary?

Pitch the Next Hit: Wie Communities Serien entwickeln

Future Box

Wie entstehen die Serien von morgen? Und wer entscheidet eigentlich, welche Geschichten erzählt werden?

In dieser interaktiven Session entwickelt das Publikum gemeinsam mit dem Team von Eilin live die Idee für eine neue Vertical-Serie. Über Abstimmungen und kreative Entscheidungen entstehen Schritt für Schritt Genre, Figuren, Tonalität und Handlung. Mithilfe von KI wird daraus in Echtzeit ein Treatment entwickelt und schließlich ein Pitch-Video erstellt.

Die Session gibt Einblicke in neue Formen der kollaborativen Stoffentwicklung, bei denen Communities nicht nur Zuschauerinnen, sondern aktive Mitgestalterinnen werden. Dabei diskutieren wir, wie Creator Communities, KI und digitale Plattformen die Entwicklung von Geschichten verändern – und welche Rolle Publikum und Kreative künftig im Entstehungsprozess von Filmen und Serien spielen könnten.

Das Besondere: Die während der Session entwickelte Idee wird anschließend tatsächlich in den Auswahlprozess von Eilin eingebracht und kann von der Community bewertet werden.

Dome Stories
Part cinema, part spatial experiment: “Dome Stories” is a full day of international FullDome films and immersive artworks between art, immersion and speculation.

Motion Capture Solutions for Artists & Indie Studios
13:00–15:00 (pick up 12:50)
XR HUB Bavaria

This session will be hosted by XR HUB Bavaria.
Pick-up is at 12:50 at the XR Festival Kiosk.

The workshop aims to explore different motion capture (mocap) solutions for artistic projects and low-budget productions. We will look at the recording process and the fundamentals through the use of depth sensors, optical tracking via video, and explore AI tools, while also discussing how AI is influencing this technical sector.

The recorded movements will then be examined in 3D software, applied and tested on various avatars.

By offering first practical experiences, the workshop is aimed primarily at media artists, performers, and indie developers who want to explore new possibilities for extending their creative projects at the intersection of art and technology.
No prior experience with motion capture is required.

The dome is not just a screen — it’s a spatial machine. Images drift overhead, perspectives dissolve, gravity starts to feel optional. This opening session explores the dome as an artistic playground: from quantum uncertainty and fragmented memory to digital ecosystems and parallel worlds. A first dive into the strange physics of immersive storytelling.

Bodies become landscapes, data becomes emotion, biology turns cinematic. This session moves through birth, movement, ecology and decay — connecting deeply personal experiences with larger systems and environments. From labor data translated into sound and image to speculative ecosystems and dancing dead animals: strange, physical, alive.

Patterns, particles, topologies, statistics. This session leaves classical storytelling behind and moves into systems that flicker somewhere between science experiment, audiovisual installation and sensory overload. Less narrative, more immersion through structure, rhythm and scale.

Dome Stories: CONTACT ATTEMPT

In 1974, radio astronomer Frank Drake transmitted the first scientifically designed interstellar message from the Arecibo Observatory. Fifty years later, CONTACT ATTEMPT revisits this historic gesture through generative art, AI and immersive media. This special showcase by the art meets science – Foundation Herbert W. Franke brings together short works by international artists responding to communication across time, space and non-human systems — somewhere between cosmic speculation, signal transmission and machine imagination.

The final session slows things down and opens up deeper waters. Memory, perception, ecology and catastrophe drift through immersive landscapes that feel both cinematic and strangely physical. A closing block about scale — from intimate perception to environmental collapse far below the ocean surface.
