The XR focus of the Festival of the Future on the Main Stage in the DOME is planned for Friday, 4 July. Here is the programme:

XR as a Medium for Collective Experience
In this session, we ask: What can XR become as a cultural and collaborative space? How are artists and creators shaping the future of this medium – not just as a tech demo, but as a meaningful form of human expression?
With leading voices from Germany and abroad, we’ll explore how XR can move from niche to relevance, and what it will take to get there.
A conversation about aesthetics, technology – and the spaces in between.

New Realities Competition Final:
XR for a Better Future
Under the patronage of Bavaria’s Minister for Digital Affairs, Dr. Fabian Mehring, the New Realities Competition 2025 – hosted by XR HUB Bavaria and 1E9 – celebrates innovative ideas that harness XR technologies to improve our world and create new experiences.
This year’s focus is on the fusion of Extended Reality (XR) and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
From a pool of submissions, the most promising projects have been selected to present their concepts at this grand finale.
Six finalists will showcase their ideas to a distinguished international jury:
- Ellen Kuo, Head of XR Market at NewImages Festival
- Laetitia Bochud, Virtual Switzerland
- Michael Barngrover, XR4Europe
The winning project will receive a € 1.000 prize, recognizing excellence in leveraging XR and AI for societal benefit.

LUMINESCENCE – An Interactive Mixed Reality Experience
Created by artists Anke Schiemann, /p, and She’s Excited!
LUMINESCENCE is an immersive Mixed Reality music performance that lets the audience dive into the ocean – both literally and metaphorically. Using an Augmented Reality app, participants follow the path of marine currents, encountering life in the deep sea while confronting the impact of ocean pollution. As species are forced to relocate or face extinction, the piece explores the fragile interdependence of marine ecosystems and human survival. Live music and audience-triggered sounds blend into a collective, real-time experience.
At the Festival der Zukunft, the project expands with a full-dome installation in the Planetarium, intensifying its sensory and emotional depth.

MUNICH BEYOND: Welcome to Bavaria’s XR Ecosystem!

This session offers an introduction into Bavaria’s rapidly growing XR ecosystem – now gaining momentum through the launch of MUNICH Beyond. As a new joint initiative by Festival der Zukunft, Filmfest München, XR HUB Bavaria, Residenztheater, and FFF Bayern, MUNICH Beyond showcases groundbreaking XR art from around the world and positions Munich as a global stage for immersive media. In this opening session, key players from the region will outline who is shaping the XR scene, how public and institutional support fuels innovation, and what strategic steps lie ahead to further expand Bavaria’s role as a hub for creative and technological excellence in XR.
