Kunst & Kultur
In November, Belgian XR collective CREW will begin their residency at Munich’s Residenz Theater, where they’ll start producing Tremens, an innovative immersive performance blending virtual reality with live theater.
During this residency, CREW will collaborate with a range of Munich-based artistic, technological, and educational partners, including XR HUB Bavaria, Numix Lab, Theater Museum München, and Hochschule für Musik & Theater München. This collaboration aims to enrich the local cultural landscape, fostering exchanges of expertise and ideas around the intersection of technology and performance.
Experience the CREW’s work in progress and discuss with them.

Tremens is an XR performance that immerses audiences in a dystopian digital world, merging VR and live theater to explore technology’s impact on identity. British actor Jerry Killick (known for his work with acclaimed theater companies Forced Entertainment and Improbable) brings Tremens to life, pushing a beat-up shopping cart with an LCD screen as his window into the metaverse. Actors Booi Kluiving and Wieke van Rosmaelen serve as motion capture performers, guiding immersants through the experience while their physical bodies are transformed into multiple avatars that populate the digital landscape. The avatars are designed to behave in such a way that immersants cannot easily distinguish between the physical actors and their digital counterparts, prompting questions about how we respond to avatars and the nature of our bonds with them. With biting wit and cynicism, Killick challenges both virtual participants and live spectators with sharp reflections on technology’s broken promises. As Tremens wanders through this fractured world, the performance reveals the isolating and controlling effects of digital spaces, prompting us to reflect on our relationship with technology.
Drawing inspiration from tech figures like Zuckerberg and Musk, Tremens is a commentary on the myth of a “perfect” digital world. Through Killick’s performance, the piece shows how, rather than connecting us, these virtual spaces can isolate and control us in unexpected ways, prompting us to reflect on our relationship with technology and identity.
